Douro Valley

Few truly understand the human effort it takes to cultivate vineyards in this region, but it is widely recognized that the Douro Valley produces one of the greatest fortified wines in the world - Port Wine.

The Douro is a valley, it is the vineyard, and it is the wine.
Sheltered from Atlantic winds by the Marão and Montemuro mountain ranges, the Douro Valley demanded creative solutions to plant vineyards on steep slopes. Following the transformation of the river, the work of generations turned schist mountains into terraces and walls—a collective achievement of multiple cultures, a lifelong endeavor, a true human epic.

Across the landscape, you can observe four major vineyard systems:

  • Narrow terraces supported by dry-stone walls
  • Wide, sloped terraces following natural contour lines
  • Horizontal platforms separated by earthen slopes
  • Vertically planted vineyards following the steepest line of the hill

Whether you explore by road, train, boat, or even helicopter - the Douro will leave you in awe. From scenic viewpoints overlooking the world’s oldest demarcated wine region, the Douro (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), you’ll witness landscapes of unparalleled beauty.

EN 222: The World’s Best RoadIn 2015, the EN 222 was named the best national road in the world.
Framed by breathtaking scenery, the most stunning stretch connects Peso da Régua to Pinhão.

Pinhão
Located in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region, Pinhão welcomes visitors with age-old traditions, grape harvests, historic wineries, local crafts, and, above all, the iconic terraced vineyard landscapes.
Its railway station, decorated with 19th-century hand-painted tiles, is one of the most beautiful in Portugal.

São Leonardo de Galafura
With a panoramic 360-degree view, the beauty of this spot captivates the soul and has inspired poets—Miguel Torga among them.
A viewpoint not to be missed, offering an indescribable vista over the Douro.

São Salvador do Mundo
Located in São João da Pesqueira, this viewpoint stands at 493 meters altitude, offering a dramatic landscape: steep, rugged slopes in contrast with terraced vineyards, olive groves, and orchards.

Suggested itinerary: Douro Valley Route

This is a must-do route for anyone wishing to experience the Douro in all its beauty and fullness.
Start your journey at Quinta de Recião, with the first stop at Peso da Régua, traveling along the road through Figueira and Valdigem, where spectacular views of the river and the Varosa Dam await.

As you head towards São Leonardo de Galafura, the Douro River begins to reveal itself, embraced by endless rows of vines. Upon reaching this unforgettable viewpoint, you’ll feel the urge to stay forever, wrapped in the same tranquility that inspired Miguel Torga’s most beautiful poetry.

But the journey continues - a breathtaking descent to Covelinhas, with winding curves that lead you closer and closer to the Douro River.
At Covelinhas Station, we recommend following the narrow asphalt road nestled among vineyards, which ends at the Bagaúste Dam. From here, cross to the opposite riverbank and join the legendary EN 222. Until you reach Pinhão, every curve is pure driving pleasure on the most beautiful national road in the world.

Once in the heart of the Douro, take time to enjoy the customs and traditions of this charming village.

Finally, head to the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint, in São João da Pesqueira, to relax, reflect, and fully take in the incredible beauty experienced throughout this unforgettable day.
