Castle Quarter (Bairro do Castelo)

The birthplace of the city of Lamego, this historic area is now classified as a National Monument. Dating back to the 12th century, three key elements of the medieval period still remain: the keep tower, part of the fortified wall, and the cistern.
At opposite ends of the old town, you'll find the two original city gates:

  • To the north, the Porta dos Figos
  • To the south, the Porta do Sol, overlooking the cathedral district

Castle
Although it has undergone several transformations over time, the Castle of Lamego is now open to visitors and offers the opportunity to walk along the parapet walk of the ancient walls.

Cistern
Following major restoration works, the Lamego Cistern has become one of the finest examples of urban cisterns from the medieval period in Portugal.
Here, visitors are immersed in 800 years of sounds, images, and memories, projected onto the stone walls that once stood in silent witness to the city’s past.

Archaeological Center
A captivating video projection accompanies a collection of archaeological remains uncovered in Lamego, illustrating the city’s transformation across centuries.
